About Josephine Spaull OAM
Josephine Spaull was a ballet dancer, teacher and examiner who was a Charter Member of the Zonta International Clubs of Darling Range and Bunbury. Zonta International is a non-sectarian and non-partisan global organization of professionals working to build a better world for women and girls through service and advocacy. (See www.zonta.org for more information about Zonta). Josephine was a dedicated member of Zonta for 35 years.
Josephine came to Perth from England in 1960, after a successful career working with the Royal Shakespeare Co, Ballet Rambert, the old Vic and Drury Lane. In Perth, she continued to teach ballet as well as regularly tour many rural towns to teach country children. She was a founding member of WA Academy of Performing Arts and also Ausdance in Western Australia.
She was awarded a Lifetime Achievement from Ausdance in 2011 and in the same year she was inducted into the Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame.
After moving to Bridgetown in 1985 Josephine continued to teach ballet, and examine for the Cecchetti Society, nationally and internationally.
In 2012 Josephine was recognised in the Australia Day Honours list with an Order of Australia Medal for her outstanding and meritorious services to the performing arts, especially dance.
About the Scholarship
Josephine believed that learning about and being involved in the performing arts helps to develop confidence and life skills such as listening, responding, resilience, balance, accepting constructive advice, as well as the specific skills needed to perform. Her legacy provided funds for the Zonta Club of Bunbury to offer performing arts scholarships and the first scholarships were granted to four young women in 2020. Read about all the scholarship recipients below.
