Celebrating International Literacy Day 2022
8th Sept 2022
United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) seeks to build peace through international co-operation in Education, the Sciences and Culture.
International Literacy Day (ILD), was designated by UNESCO in 1967, and is an annual awareness day which marks the importance of literacy to all countries and cultures. It takes place annually on 8th September. This year's ILD was celebrated worldwide under the theme, "Transforming Literacy Learning Spaces" and was an opportunity to rethink the fundamental importance of literacy learning spaces to build resilience and ensure quality, equitable and inclusive education for all.
Celebrating and acknowledging International Literacy Day is an annual event on the Zonta Club of Bunbury’s calendar. This year, Bunbury Zonta members Chris Aldis and Pat Hollier attended the Djidi Djidi School on behalf of the club to read the pre-primary children a book called RESPECT, written by Aunty Muir and Sue Lawson.
The children responded well and quickly interacted with this book about how we show respect in our lives. They were especially excited to learn that one of the Respect books would be given to them after school to take home.
The reading and gifting of a book was a very worthwhile cause culturally for the pre-primary students at Djidi Djidi School and we thank students and their early childhood teacher Rachael Murphy for participating in this special event with us.

2022 National Volunteer Week - Zonta Bunbury volunteers acknowledged

Tues May 17, 2022
173 volunteers in Western Australia were acknowledged by the Government of WA during 2022 National Volunteer Week and five members of the Zonta Club of Bunbury were among them.
Collectively, the five members have spent a total of 167 years volunteering for their organisation and each received a certificate and a 25-year volunteering pin from local member Mr Don Punch, MLA at a dinner at the Highway Hotel, Bunbury on the 17th May.
Fiona Brockman joined the club when it was chartered in 1988, and helped to get the fledgling club on its feet. She remains the sole charter member of the club and had the pivotal role of District Conference Chairman in 2003, when Zonta members from all over Australia came to Bunbury for a District Conference. Ellen Cox was a member of the Zonta Club of Perth before transferring to Bunbury and is the longest serving member of the club, with 46 years of voluntary service. Ellen, along with Tyril Houghton (32 years) and Nan Martella (25 years), have all served as Club Presidents, (twice for Nan) as well as volunteering in several roles not only at club but also at the district level, which includes all Australian states except NSW, ACT and Queensland. Barbara Delves (28 years) is the fifth member recognised for her long-term volunteering contributions and apart from other roles, her skills and knowledge as a librarian have helped to safeguard the archives of the club.
Jo Wittorff, the club’s PR and Communications Chairman said, “This year’s National Volunteer Week theme, “Better Together” is exactly what the Zonta Club of Bunbury is all about. Individually, we can contribute, but everyone in the club has particular strengths and when we all connect, we not only use our individual knowledge and expertise to work to build a better world for women and girls, we also learn such a lot from each other with the added bonus of forming lasting friendships.”

Zonta Club of Bunbury distributes 40 books to celebrate 2021 International Literacy Day

20 Sept 2021
Mothers and their children attending playgroups in Bunbury were given books in celebration of the United Nations’ International Literacy Day recently.
The Zonta Club of Bunbury distributed books to 40 mothers and children at three Multicultural Playgroups in Bunbury and Eaton, as well as a playgroup run by the South West Aboriginal Medical Service.
Through giving books to children, the club hopes to promote the importance of parents reading to their children to improve literacy levels as well as to promote Literacy Day which is held each year on the 8th of September.
The Zonta Club of Bunbury’s Service Committee Chairman, Amanda Whittle, said since 1995, the group had been donating books to various organisations such as child and parent centres, young mums’ groups and to new-born babies and their parents.
“It is always a pleasant surprise when our Club members come and read to the children and then give them a lovely book they can take home with them,” she said.
“This year we wanted to include young multicultural and Noongar children in our International Literacy Week activities.”
“The Zonta Club of Bunbury supports International Literacy Day because it aligns closely with what we work for,” she said. “This is a day that reminds people of the importance of literacy as a matter of dignity and human rights, and through education this can be achieved’.
“We sometimes take for granted the skill of reading and understanding the written word but there are still people in our community who grapple with literacy skills.
There are nearly 800 million adults in the world who have no, or only basic, literacy skills according to UNESCO and the past 18 months with COVID have provided its own challenges in regards to education. The 2021 Literacy Day theme was “Literacy for a human-centred recovery: Narrowing the digital divide” and this acknowledges how difficult it has been for some students to access and use online learning during lockdowns and breaks away from traditional learning practices.”
The books, like all of Zonta’s local projects, are paid for through fundraising events throughout the year. More information on these events can be found on the Zonta Club of Bunbury Facebook page or via this website www.zontabunbury.org under 'Events, Flyers & Forms'.

Zonta Club of Bunbury members worked with members of the community at the Stirling Street Arts Centre on Saturday May 1st to produce much needed breast cushions. Chris Durrant, Zonta Bunbury’s Breast Cushion Coordinator said, “We were hoping to make 200 cushions, but we worked hard all day and were delighted that the final count was 250!”
Breast cushions provide protection and comfort to women and men who have undergone breast surgery, such as a mastectomy. The crescent-shaped cushions are made by Zonta clubs throughout Australia and are distributed without charge. Feedback received from those who have received Zonta cushions are a testament to the comfort and protection that cushions provide.
Amanda Whittle, Zonta Bunbury Service Committee Chairman said, “Sadly, we often cannot keep up with the demand for our cushions and were fortunate to receive a community grant from AQWEST this year, that enabled our club to hold this special production day and invite community members to help us get ahead. We greatly appreciate this support from AQWEST.”
In Bunbury, cushions are distributed through the McGrath nurses at the South West Health Campus and Zonta Bunbury also responds to individual requests. Anyone in need of a breast cushion can contact zontabunbury@yahoo.com.au to request one.
The club is grateful to community members, including some Kingia Z Club members from Bunbury Senior High School, for their generous support, and also acknowledges donations from Aileen Smith, Bakers Delight, Bunbury Farmers Market, The Cheesecake Shop Bunbury, Coles Australind and Staley's.

Zonta Bunbury announces 2020 Young Women in Public Affairs recipient

BUNBURY WA — 2nd April 2020— Amber Ramage, 2019 Head Girl of Bunbury Senior High School was named the recipient of the 2020 Zonta International Zonta Club of Bunbury Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award.
The goal of the YWPA Award program is to encourage young women to participate in public affairs by recognising a young woman’s commitment to the volunteer sector, evidence of volunteer leadership achievements and a dedication to the empowerment of women. The award was established in 1990.
Zonta Bunbury president Beth Talbot stated, “Applicants are asked to reflect on their voluntary commitment to their school and their community and the problems limiting the empowerment of women in their own country and worldwide. The Zonta International YWPA Award program looks to the young women of today for the leaders of tomorrow. We have no doubt that Amber’s excellent leadership skills and experiences will stand her in good stead for the future.”
Amber Ramage was named the 2020 Zonta Club of Bunbury YWPA Award recipient because of her participation in a wide range of leadership- and teamwork-related activities, developing invaluable skills in networking, public speaking, time management and teamwork. She initiated and led the Coat Donation Campaign in Bunbury, that supplies the homeless or those in need with coats, scarves or jumpers, which are donated by the community. By initiating and organising an ‘Eco Club’ for year 7’s and 8’s at her school, she developed the awareness of the need to reduce landfill, thus improving the sustainability of the school’s environment.
Amber has been offered a place in her preferred course, the Bachelor of Physiotherapy, at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle but she has deferred her studies for 12 months and is presently taking a ‘gap’ year. Her goal is to complete her degree and gain a few years’ experience before specialising in either sports physiotherapy or women’s health. She is passionate about environmental sustainability and works as a volunteer to raise awareness about environmental protection in the Bunbury area.
The Zonta Club of Bunbury has now forwarded Amber’s application to the Zonta district coordinator for judging at the district level as the YWPA program operates at the Zonta club, district/region and international levels. Zonta clubs provide awards for club recipients, and district/region and international awards are funded by the Zonta International Foundation. District recipients receive US$1,500, and 10 international recipients are selected from the district/region recipients to receive awards of US$4,000 each.

Fellowship on the 'Run!'
30th August 2017
On the suggestion of club member Amanda Whittle, 12 members of the Zonta Club of Bunbury participated in the annual Fun Run / Walk held by the Bunbury Runners' Club. The South West Refuge was the beneficiary of funds raised so it was a cause dear to our hearts. A few members (possibly the fitter ones??) chose to 'run, whilst others walked the 5k distance. It was a great event that was thoroughly enjoyed by those who took part, so much so, that on the last Sunday of the month, such a walk is being mooted as a regular club fellowship activity. Coffee and brunch at the conclusion of the Fun Run was a great way to finish the morning! |

Area 3 Workshop - 25th March 2017
(Thanks to Kerry Kerr and Dawn Newman for the photos)
55 Zontians gathered at Cyril Jackson Senior Campus for the annual Area 3 Workshop hosted by the Zonta Club of Swan Hills with Area Director Jo Wittorff. The theme of the day was 'Moving forward, together' and information, strategies and tips from each of the six Area 3 clubs assisted in developing this theme. The interactive workshop after lunch provided further opportunities to share ideas.
Governor Judy Gorton provided updates from International and District, including news of the new Young Professional membership category (available now!), the 20% discount for first timers at the Geelong District Conference and new Z Clubs in Tasmania. Judy also delivered Lt Governor and Membership Chairman Jane Adornetto's Membership presentation entitled 'A Vital Zonta Club Life'. Valuable information gathered by Jane through Exit Surveys to past members gave an insight into why these people left our clubs - something for us to work on!
Our appreciation to Ann Horrocks, Past D23 Governor, Vice Chairman of the ZI Nominating Committee, Chairman of the D23 Nominating Committee and District Parliamentarian, who travelled to WA especially for our Workshop to encourage nominations for ZI and D23 positions. (Ann said her trip to WA was certainly worthwhile as there were several Zontians interested in nominating!)
Guest speaker, 11 year old Bella Burgermeister from Bunbury 'wowed' us all with her insight and passion to support the UN's 17 Global Goals for Sustainability, including Goal 5: Gender Equality. Bella's presentation was a highlight of the day (and we felt guilty that we were using plastic drink bottles and plates)!
Many thanks to all Zontians who had an input at the Workshop. Special thanks to the Zonta Club of Swan Hills, especially Workshop committee members Barbara Goulden and Ruth Thomas who worked closely with Area Director Jo Wittorff to organise the day.

Zonta Says NO in Area 3 (Western Australia)
“Zonta Says NO to Violence Against Women” is a Zonta International campaign to raise awareness of and increase actions to end violence against women and girls around the world. Access more information here.
In support of this campaign, Zonta Clubs in Area 3 have engaged in advocacy activities across the State, joining with their local communities to end violence against women and remember those who have lost their lives as victims of domestic violence. On Friday 18th November the Zonta Club of Peel joined with many members of other local groups and the general community at the Mewburn Gardens in Mandurah for the sixth annual Peel Regional Domestic Violence Memorial and Silent Walk. See more from the Peel Zonta Club here. Zonta Club of Bunbury members participated in the White Ribbon Day March with community members held on the 23rd November instead of the 25th, when 'It's no secret'', a National Conference on domestic violence organised by Waratah being held here with Zontians attending. A Memorial Service to remember those who have lost their lives due to domestic violence followed the Bunbury march. White silhouettes were cut out and painted by prisoners at the local prison. There were 19 silhouettes - the number of deaths through domestic violence in WA from 1/1/16 until now. There were also 67 white crosses symbolising the national death toll so far this year. On November 25th, Area 3 clubs joined the Silent Memorial Marches in their communities. Zonta House Refuge and members of the Zonta Club of Perth combined for the Perth City event and received great support from the WA Police and the Police Commissioner, who visited their stand. Members of the Zonta Club of Swan Hills marched with their local community through Midland. Zonta Club of Bunbury members living in Bridgetown distributed white ribbons in their town and were saddened by the horrific stories they heard from domestic violence victims. On Saturday 26th November, Bunbury Zonta members set up an Advocacy stall at the Bunbury Forum Shopping Centre and distributed white ribbons and information to the public. Also on Saturday 26th November, the Zonta Club of Perth Northern Suburbs combined a major fundraising activity – ‘Celebrity Tray Project’ to coincide with the start of the United Nations 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence Campaign. View more information about the ‘Celebrity Tray Project’ project here. |

2016 Birthing Kit Assembly Day
12 November 2016
Over 40 volunteers came together on Saturday afternoon, 12th November, to assemble 1600 birthing kits for the Birthing Kit Foundation of Australia. The afternoon was filled with laughter, some impressive assembly plans, a wonderful afternoon tea and just a little bit of interesting chaos! And of course the final outcome of 1600 kits which will go to women in developing countries and refugee camps to assist them and their babies to have a safe and hygenic birth.
As well as the wonderful outcome, the joy of the day was to see the sense of community and participation this activity generates for both Zontians and those volunteers who come from diverse parts of the community. This year we had participation from students at Dallyelup College through the guidance of Lyn Wynne, from Jan Grieve and her volunteers from the ladies of the SW United Lodge and Bethany Eaton, soap made and shaped by club member Karen Mazzella, the great space made available by Sue Kerr at Newton Moore Senior High School, volunteers from scouts, book clubs, yoga classes, work colleagues as well as friends and family of Zontians and of course the wonderful Zontians themselves. We were also able to achieve the assembly of 600 more kits this year because of the fundraising by Zontians who attended Rotary meetings and club member Amanda and Linda's quilt making and exhibition at the Art Safari, as well as the sponsorship of kits received at our International Women's Day Breakfast in March. Thank you to all Helen Hemsley and Jenni Smith Birthing Kit Coordinators, Zonta Club of Bunbury |

WA Zonta Clubs recognise Outstanding Women
5 November 2016
Around 100 people gathered at the Sanctuary Golf Resort in Bunbury on Saturday 5th November to join the six Zonta Clubs in WA (Area 3) in celebrating the 97th anniversary of Zonta International, which was founded on 8 November 1919. A special feature of the night was the presentation of the Area 3 Woman of Achievement Award, which recognises and honours a woman who personifies the spirit and humanitarianism of the founders of Zonta.
Each club in Area 3 may nominate a woman who exhibits commitment through service or advocacy to the areas in which Zonta works to empower women. The nominee must be a woman who has previously been unrecognized at National or State levels for her community service, but whose contribution in the community is outstanding. Her contribution may be at local, national or international level. Members of Zonta International are ineligible.
Mavis Steenson, nominated by the Zonta Club of Perth, won the 2016 Area 3 Award. Mavis was recognised her outstanding contribution to supporting women in our community through her work at Zonta House Refuge over more than 28 years. Some of this time she worked as a volunteer, some as a paid employee. She has been totally committed to the women at the Refuge over and beyond her paid position. Since her retirement in 2015, she continues to serve her community as a Justice of the Peace and is a volunteer at ACTIV Rockingham where she provides support for disabled people.
Finalist Nonie Browner, nominated by the Zonta Club of Perth Northern Suburbs was recognised for her work as the founder of the Police Widows Guild and one of WA Police Legacy’s longest serving and hardest working volunteers. She is currently serving on their Board of Directors. Nonie’s other community service in other areas such as Meals on Wheels, Basketball for the Disabled, driving for Para quads and her extensive work with the Police & Citizens Youth Clubs was also recognised.
Brenda Dawes of Bridgetown, Bunbury’s nominee for the award, was recognised for her voluntary work with several organisations, in particular her latest work with the “Days for Girls,” an organisation that believes that every girl, everywhere should have access to effective, efficient and sustainable menstrual hygiene management.
Area 3 Director Jo Wittorff said, “All three women were outstanding nominees and are to be commended for their community service. The selection panel had a difficult decision to select just one winner.”

October Guest Speaker
18 October 2016

Our October guest speaker, Rita Ghasseb, was born in the Middle East but has been a South West resident for the past 20 years. As Rita told us of her happy and carefree upbringing in Syria, and how she now struggles to comes to terms with the enormity of the refugee crisis that has unfolded in her place of birth, club members were reminded of how privileged we are to live where we do.
Rita’s parents are still in Syria and cannot leave. She worries about them constantly as they are exposed to daily scenes of violence and misses not being able to see them regularly.

September Guest Speaker
20 September 2016
At our September meeting, Bridgetown resident Brenda Dawes spoke about the international organisation “Days for Girls”, an organisation that believes that every girl, everywhere should have access to effective, efficient and sustainable menstrual hygiene management. Days for girls is a vital part of giving back days of dignity, education and opportunity every month to women in disadvantaged communities – Values that are core to Zonta International.
Days for Girls has over 600 teams and chapters worldwide, more than 80 of those teams are in Australia and Brenda is the Team Leader in Bridgetown. Brenda facilitates sewing workshops, mentors individuals and small groups who have contributed many hours sewing days for girl’s kits and collecting donations for other kit components. Each menstrual kit lasts a girl on average 3 years. Giving days back to girls so their education is not interrupted. Brenda’s vision expanded quickly and in April 2015, 410 kits along with sewing machines and necessary equipment to help launch a days for girls micro enterprise in Papua New Guinea was shipped out. |

Farewell to Myalup Vines - 17 January 2016
Last Sunday, 17th January, was our final fundraiser at Myalup Vines Winery, which closed its doors after our function. Even though it turned out to be a windy and cold afternoon, it was a fantastic last fundraising function at Myalup Vines Winery and we greatly appreciated the support of everyone who came along.
We acknowledge the wonderful support we have received from Trevor and Carmel Hutchison of Myalup Vines, who have allowed our club to hold this fundraiser at their winery for the past 10 years! We wish them a happy and healthy retirement. We acknowledge and thank our wonderful entertainers, who have donated their time at our event over many years:
We feel privileged to have had the support of so many generous people and businesses over the past ten years of this event. |

Floral Bras and Footy Boots - Wisdom on International Women's Day
8th March 2015
Michelle Cowan, Assistant Coach to the South Fremantle Football Club, enlightened the 300 strong audience assembled at the Lord Forrest to celebrate International Women’s Day of her challenges and triumphs to gain her current position in a ‘man’s world’ as Assistant Coach to the South Fremantle team.
Each of us will get to a ‘fork in the road’ and that is when ‘decisions must be made that will be life changing’. By having a plan we can and should take that vital step forward. ‘If you want to do it, we will make it happen’, is the mantra of her supportive husband, enabling Michelle to combine motherhood and her career. As she said ‘To be the best, delegate the rest’, so that you can focus on the important tasks necessary to achieving your goals.’
The four P’s of passion, planning, people and being powerful were key concepts in Michelle’s message to attendees.
Finding your passion, no matter what it is and go for it, planning to succeed by writing down your goals and telling others and then getting on with it, people- surrounding yourself with supportive people as effective mentors prevents you having to reinvent the wheel and finally being powerful enough to put yourself forward for that new challenge. This will provide the necessary opportunities to be the best you can be.
Highlighting the role of effective mentors such as Darren Harris, coach of West Perth WAFL club and Paul Roos as coach of Melbourne AFL club, Michelle detailed how important these people had been in her life. Each of these most effective coaches have taught her that passion and clear communication are critical to success, whether it be in sport, in business or your private life.
